Mahmood Khan Achakzai Appointed Pakistan's New Opposition Leader
Pakistan's National Assembly has formally appointed veteran politician Mahmood Khan Achakzai as the country's new leader of the opposition, filling a post that had remained vacant for several months.
Speaker Ayaz Sadiq announced the appointment on Friday, after jailed former prime minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party nominated Achakzai for the role.
Achakzai replaces Umar Ayub, the former opposition leader who was sentenced to 10 years in prison over his alleged role in violent protests in May 2023 and subsequently removed from office.
The opposition leadership vacancy had underscored political paralysis in Pakistan, where tensions between the government and Imran Khan's party have intensified following Khan's arrest and conviction.
Achakzai is the head of the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party and is widely regarded as a Pashtun nationalist with long-standing ties to regional politics and Afghanistan.
Senior PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi told Geo News that Imran Khan had authorised Achakzai to engage in dialogue with the government, saying he was best placed to decide the opposition's next steps.
In his first news conference on Saturday, Achakzai said tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan should be resolved through dialogue, regional mediation and guarantees from the United Nations Security Council, rather than conflict.
The new opposition leader now faces the challenge of uniting fragmented opposition forces while navigating Pakistan's strained domestic politics and volatile regional environment.
