While such accidents often attract the attention of passing drivers, authorities warn against the dangerous habit of slowing down to observe crash scenes - a behaviour also known as rubbernecking.
Not only is rubbernecking considered a traffic offence in the UAE, but it also carries serious consequences. Motorists caught engaging in this behaviour may face a fine of Dh1,000 and, in some emirates, vehicle impoundment for 14 days.
Experts stress that beyond delays and accidents, rubbernecking leads to increased fuel use, faster brake wear, and loss of driver focus.
