Schumer Condemns Supreme Court Decision
(MENAFN) US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer harshly criticized a recent Supreme Court verdict that grants President Donald Trump the ability to proceed with large-scale layoffs within the Department of Education.
"Disgusting," Schumer expressed on Monday via X.
His reaction followed the Supreme Court’s reversal of a previous ruling by a lower court that had blocked significant job cuts and other restructuring plans at the department.
This reversal supports the Trump administration’s broader initiative to downscale federal involvement in education and delegate more power to individual states.
With this ruling, the administration is now permitted to carry on with the dismissal of almost half of the department’s personnel, which occurred in March.
Additional actions include transferring oversight of the federal student loan program.
Schumer accused Trump and Education Secretary Linda McMahon of seeking to "take a chainsaw" to America’s public education system, claiming they are laying off thousands of workers and neglecting the needs of millions of students.
"All they want to do is impose their ideology on our kids' education and tear it apart. This isn’t streamlining. It’s sabotage. And it's American kids paying the price," he continued.
In contrast, McMahon endorsed the decision, indicating that the department will advance its workforce downsizing and persist in its mission to return educational governance to the states.
