Hand Over J & K Security To Elected Govt: CM To Centre

(MENAFN- Kashmir Observer) Srinagar- Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday reiterated his demand for the immediate restoration of statehood to J&K and called for the transfer of security control to the elected government, asserting that the region should no longer function as a Union Territory.

Speaking at a special interaction with tour operators in Kolkata, Omar said the people of Jammu and Kashmir have waited long enough for the return of their democratic rights and administrative autonomy.“We don't want to remain as a Union Territory. We want the responsibility of security to be ours,” Omar said.

The Chief Minister also revealed that he had discussed the prevailing political situation in J&K with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during their recent meeting. He said Banerjee publicly supported the demand for the restoration of security powers to the elected government.

“Unfortunately, we are presently a UT. The Centre, BJP, and Government of India have promised to restore statehood. We don't want any further delay in this pious process. Statehood should be ensured at the earliest, and the responsibility of security should be given to the elected government. We will take care of it,” he added.

Calls for Timely Elections in J&K

Responding to a question about the electoral process in the region, Omar highlighted the prolonged absence of democratic elections.

Tourism as a Unifying Force

On the sidelines of his interaction with tour operators, Omar promoted Jammu and Kashmir as a premier tourism destination, inviting national stakeholders to collaborate in expanding the region's visitor footprint.

A post from the Office of the Chief Minister, J&K on X said:“Chief Minister held a special interaction with tour operators from across the country, highlighting the unique tourism experiences Jammu & Kashmir has to offer. He invited them to collaborate in promoting the region and assured full support from the government.”
