Tokyo Stocks Drop Amid Trump Tariff Concerns
(MENAFN) Tokyo's stock market closed lower on Monday as investors adopted a cautious stance following U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement that letters detailing new unilateral tariffs would be sent to select countries this week.
Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 fell by 223.20 points, or 0.56%, closing at 39,587.68. The broader Topix index also declined, shedding 16.23 points, or 0.57%, to end at 2,811.72.
Market sentiment was weighed down by uncertainty over whether Japan would be among the nations receiving the tariff letters, especially with the deadline for a pause on so-called reciprocal tariffs expiring July 9. As a result, many investors held back from making significant trades.
On Friday, Trump said he had signed letters to about a dozen countries outlining tariff levels on goods exported to the United States.
