45 Opposition Party Members In Türkiye's Izmir Arrested On Corruption Charges


(MENAFN- Nam News Network) ISTANBUL, Jul 5 (NNN-TRT) – Turkish authorities arrested 45 opposition party members, in the western port city of Izmir, on corruption charges, yesterday, the NTV broadcaster reported.

The Republican People's Party (CHP), announced on the social media platform X that, former Izmir Mayor, Tunc Soyer and Senol Aslanoglu, the party's Izmir provincial chair, were among those arrested.

The arrests followed detention warrants issued on Tuesday by the Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, for 157 individuals affiliated with the CHP, and the CHP-led Izmir Municipality, on charges including“rigging public tenders,”“breach of duty in contract execution,” and“aggravated fraud.”

In March, Istanbul Mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, and around 100 officials from the Istanbul municipality were detained on corruption charges. Imamoglu, who denied all the accusations, was later suspended from office.– NNN-TRT
