DOHA: The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Somalia in Qatar recently celebrated the 65th anniversary of Somalia's independence with a special ceremony held at the Sheraton Hotel.

The event was attended by Minister of State for Foreign Trade Affairs H E Dr. Ahmad bin Mohamed Al-Sayed, Ambassador of Eritrea to Qatar and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps H E Ali Ibrahim Ahmed, members of the diplomatic corps, and the Somali community in Qatar.

Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador of Somalia to Qatar H E Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Sheikh Ali, expressed deep appreciation to Qatar for its long-standing and strategic partnership with Somalia, which spans over half a century.“What Somalia has achieved, or is working to achieve, could not have been possible without the support of our brothers and friends,” he said, adding,“Qatar has always stood by Somalia in vital areas such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, and humanitarian assistance.”

Ambassador Sheikh highlighted the recent high-level visits between Somali and Qatari leaders as a testament to the strong and growing ties between the two nations.“Discussions during these visits focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation, including labor agreements that would facilitate the recruitment of Somali workers to contribute to Qatar's economy and provide dignified employment opportunities for Somali youth.”

Dr. Sheikh praised Qatar's diplomatic approach, describing it as“rational, wise, and balanced.” He commended the Qatari leadership for its wise handling of regional crises-especially its role in de-escalating tensions following the recent Iranian attack.“Qatar managed not only to safeguard its sovereignty but also to mediate and ease tensions, showing restraint and commitment to dialogue in a time of heightened regional risk,” he noted.

The Ambassador stated that Somalia holds Qatar's approach to crisis management in high regard, viewing it as a model of political maturity and statesmanship that transforms crises into opportunities for peace and stability.

Reflecting on Somalia's Independence Day, Dr. Sheikh said that July 1 marks the unification of the northern and southern regions of Somalia and the birth of a sovereign state in 1960.“This day symbolizes the great sacrifices and struggles of our people for freedom and unity,” he said.
