Egypt: 4 Dead, 18 Injured In Dredger Sinking, Suez Canal Unaffected

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) CAIRO, July 2 (KUNA) -- Egypt announced Wednesday that four workers died and 18 others were injured after the barge Adam Marine 12 sank late Tuesday in the Gulf of Suez.
In a statement, the Ministry of Health and Population said all necessary medical care is being provided, with Red Sea hospitals on alert and authorities closely monitoring to ensure victims' conditions remain stable.
Rescue and search operations are ongoing, with regular updates as the situation develops, the statement added.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources confirmed the dredger capsized while being towed, noting that rescue teams from the ministry are continuing efforts to locate and recover the remaining crew members.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) Osama Rabie reassured the public that maritime traffic through the canal remains normal and unaffected by the incident.
He explained that the accident occurred outside the main navigation channel, around 300 kilometers south of the Suez Canal, a key waterway linking Europe and Asia.
The SCA's Crisis and Disaster Management Center is coordinating closely with external agencies to track the situation and stands ready to assist if needed.
According to SCA, 33 vessels transited the canal on Wednesday with a combined net tonnage of 1.4 million tons, reflecting normal operational levels. (end)
