Panama's Dana Castañeda Is Government Assembly Leader As Of July 1St 2025 -

Independent representative Augusto Palacios nominated Chandler for president of the National Assembly, while Realizando Metas representative Ronald De Gracia nominated Castañeda. In his presentation, De Gracia stated that he has no doubt that Castañeda has all the merits necessary to preside over this State body. With 45 votes the deputy of Democratic Change (CD) Didiano Pinilla was elected as first vice president of the National Assembly, while Patsy Lee, deputy of the Popular Party, obtained 25 votes. Meanwhile, Jamis Acosta, a deputy from the Realizing Goals party, was elected second vice president of the National Assembly with 38 votes, while José Pérez Barboni, a deputy from the Another Way party, obtained 32 votes. Both vice presidents, Didiano Pinilla and Jamis Acosta, were sworn in by the president of the National Assembly, Dana Castañeda.

Dana Castañeda assumed the presidency of the National Assembly on July 1, 2024, with the support of a diverse majority and a commitment to transforming the institution. During her tenure, she played a leading role in episodes that placed her at the center of political debate: promises of internal purges, tensions with the Comptroller's Office, and a staunch defense of the legislative budget. On July 1, 2024, she was elected with 44 votes in favor. That day, she was supported by her colleagues from the Realizing Goals (RM), Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD), Panameñista Party, Democratic Change (CD), and the mixed caucus.
