UK-Türkiye Foreign Ministers Set to Hold Talks in Ankara
(MENAFN) British Foreign Secretary David Lammy is set to hold talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Monday during his official visit to Türkiye, Turkish Foreign Ministry sources confirm.
Fidan is anticipated to reaffirm Türkiye’s dedication as a NATO ally and strategic partner, expressing satisfaction with the upward momentum in bilateral relations and emphasizing the goal to deepen collaboration across all sectors.
The dialogue will underscore the critical need for sustained coordination between relevant agencies on security and counter-terrorism, while recognizing economic, trade, financial, defense industry, and tourism connections as key drivers of the UK-Turkey relationship.
Officials are expected to spotlight the urgency of advancing negotiations to update the free trade agreement, aiming to accelerate economic engagement and significantly increase trade volumes between the two nations.
Türkiye and the UK, both outside the European Union, will be portrayed as essential pillars within Europe’s defense and security framework. The meeting will stress the imperative of enhancing cooperation in the defense industry amid shifting global security challenges.
Acknowledgment will also be given to the impact of nearly half a million Turkish-origin residents in the UK, highlighting their contribution to bilateral ties. The talks will reaffirm that sustained dialogue and joint efforts on regional and international issues remain vital.
The discussions will cover the necessity of a lasting resolution to the Palestinian conflict, described as central to Middle Eastern instability, while welcoming the recent Iran-Israel ceasefire. Both sides will call for renewed negotiations to address nuclear energy disputes.
Ending the Russia-Ukraine war through diplomacy will be presented as a critical priority to secure a fair and lasting peace. Additionally, following the lifting of sanctions on Syria, the meeting will encourage cooperation aimed at rebuilding the country’s economy, infrastructure, and humanitarian capacity.
This engagement represents Lammy’s inaugural official bilateral visit to Türkiye.
