Iranian Parliament Backs Strait of Hormuz Closure

(MENAFN) In response to recent American airstrikes, Iran’s legislature has endorsed a resolution to block the Strait of Hormuz to military vessels, a prominent official announced on Sunday.

According to Major General Esmaeil Kowsari, a figure on the parliamentary National Security Commission, “The parliament has reached the conclusion that the Strait of Hormuz should be closed,” as reported by a government-affiliated news outlet.

The Strait of Hormuz holds strategic importance, often described as the globe’s most vital passage for petroleum shipments.

Despite the parliamentary endorsement, Kowsari emphasized that “The final decision in this regard lies with the Supreme National Security Council.”

This body represents Iran’s top-level security organization and is responsible for making key national defense choices.

This legislative move follows US President Donald Trump’s announcement that American military forces conducted airstrikes targeting three Iranian nuclear installations located in Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan.

These strikes represent a sharp intensification in a military campaign led by the US in support of Israel, which began on June 13.

In response to the bombings, Tehran carried out counterstrikes against Israel.

Israeli officials report that no fewer than 25 individuals have lost their lives, and several hundred more have sustained injuries from the Iranian missile launches.
