Iran Endorses Shutting Strait of Hormuz After U.S. Nuclear Strikes
(MENAFN) A top Iranian lawmaker revealed on Sunday that the country’s parliament has authorized a plan to block naval passage through the Strait of Hormuz in response to recent US airstrikes targeting three nuclear facilities.
Major General Esmaeil Kowsari, part of the parliament’s National Security Commission, told media, “The parliament has reached the conclusion that the Strait of Hormuz should be closed.”
This narrow waterway is globally recognized as the most critical channel for oil shipments.
However, Kowsari clarified that, “The final decision in this regard lies with the Supreme National Security Council,” which is Iran’s principal body overseeing national security matters.
Earlier Sunday, US President Donald Trump announced that American forces had struck three Iranian nuclear sites located in Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan.
These attacks represent the latest chapter in a US-supported Israeli military campaign against Iran, which has been ongoing since June 13 and has triggered Iranian counterstrikes targeting Israel.
Israeli officials report that Iranian missile attacks have resulted in at least 25 fatalities and hundreds of injuries.
Conversely, Iran’s Health Ministry states that the Israeli assault has caused 430 deaths and over 3,500 injuries within Iranian territory.
