UN warns of maternal health crisis in Gaza
(MENAFN) The United Nations has sounded the alarm over an escalating maternal health emergency in the Gaza Strip, where critical shortages of fuel and medical supplies persist due to ongoing restrictions by Israeli authorities.
At a Monday news briefing, UN spokesperson Farhan Haq highlighted that pregnant women in Gaza are surviving on severely limited food, with malnutrition increasing among expectant mothers. He revealed that one in three pregnant women faces a high-risk pregnancy, compounded by the fact that half of the essential maternal health medicines are out of stock.
Fuel supplies, particularly diesel vital for running water and medical equipment in southern Gaza, have reached dangerously low levels. Haq noted that Israeli authorities again refused to coordinate the collection of fuel supplies from Rafah.
Referencing the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), he warned that humanitarian services—including communications and banking—could soon come to a halt unless fuel supplies resume or the UN is allowed to access existing stocks within Gaza. Israeli officials rejected seven out of 17 UN coordination requests on Monday, including critical missions such as water trucking and solid waste removal.
