IOM Reports Hundreds of Migrants Intercepted Off Libya’s Coast in One Week
(MENAFN) The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported Tuesday that 414 migrants were intercepted off Libya’s coast between June 1 and June 7, 2025.
"From June 1 to 7, 2025, 414 migrants were intercepted and returned to Libya," IOM said in a statement.
Among those intercepted were 12 women and 9 children. Additionally, the bodies of three migrants were recovered during the same period, according to the agency.
Cumulatively in 2025, 9,999 migrants—comprising men, women, and children—have been stopped at sea and returned to Libya, the IOM stated. The agency also confirmed that 234 individuals have lost their lives and 226 remain missing along the Central Mediterranean route.
Libya has become a major departure point for migrants aiming to reach Europe by sea. Since the 2011 downfall of longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi, the country has plunged into instability and lawlessness, driving waves of mostly African migrants to risk the perilous journey across the Mediterranean.
