Japan, Iran Fms Vow Close Communication, Discuss Nuke Issue
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
TOKYO, June 10 (KUNA) -- Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi affirmed on Tuesday to continue close communication at various levels between Japan and Iran for the peace and stability of the Middle Eastern region, Japan's Foreign Ministry said.
During their phone talks, Iwaya and Araghchi had a candid exchange of views on Iran's nuclear issue, according to a statement released from the ministry.
The talks came after US President Donald Trump said Monday that the new round of Iran-US indirect nuclear talks will take place later this week, warning at the same time of total destruction in the case that diplomatic resolutions fail.
Iwaya emphasized that Japan strongly hopes for a peaceful resolution of the issue and that Iran should not miss the opportunity for an agreement between the US and Iran.
He also "strongly urged Iran to take concrete actions to fulfill its obligations" under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards agreement.
In addition, Iwaya confirmed that Tokyo will continue its utmost diplomatic efforts for the peaceful resolution of the issue. In response, Araghchi explained the position and efforts of Iran, the ministry added.
Iran and the US have held five rounds of indirect negotiations mediated by Oman and attended by Iranian top diplomat Aragchi and US special envoy to Middle East, Steve Witkoff. (end)
