(MENAFN) Sudanese health authorities declared on Wednesday a set of urgent actions aimed at curbing a recent cholera outbreak, noting that 90 percent of newly reported cases are concentrated in Khartoum State.

Federal Health Minister Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim detailed the response plan, which involves creating isolation facilities, securing essential medical equipment, guaranteeing water safety, and initiating public hygiene awareness campaigns.

He emphasized the vital importance of Khartoum State officials, encouraging them to enhance public awareness programs. In his formal statement, he urged citizens to maintain proper hand hygiene before and after meals, ensure the safe treatment of drinking water, dispose of waste in a responsible manner, and implement strategies to minimize the proliferation of flies.

Fath Al-Rahman Mohamed Al-Amin, who serves as director-general of the Khartoum State Ministry of Health, confirmed the establishment of 13 isolation centers within key hospitals across the region.

"These centers were established to ensure full preparedness for isolating patients and limiting the spread of the disease," Al-Amin said in a statement.

The Sudanese Ministry of Health announced that a vaccination drive launched Wednesday targets people over the age of one, with 30,204 individuals vaccinated on the first day—achieving 26 percent of the initial day’s goal. This effort is the first stage in a plan to inoculate 3 million residents of Khartoum State.

An epidemiological update released by the ministry highlighted an improvement in recovery rates among cholera patients in Khartoum’s isolation units over the last two days, with 530 patients discharged during this timeframe.

The ministry had earlier reported on Tuesday a sharp rise in cholera infections nationwide, recording 2,729 new cases and 172 fatalities within just one week.

Data from Sudan’s Federal Emergency Operations Center indicated that the total number of cholera cases reached 60,993 by May 6, with deaths climbing to 1,632.
