Cardinals Continue Papal Voting Process to Select New Pope

(MENAFN) The assembly of cardinal electors entered its second day of deliberations on Thursday, continuing the process of voting to select the next leader of the Catholic Church.

The day commenced with 133 cardinal electors participating in a morning mass held in the Pauline Chapel at approximately 8 a.m. local time (0600 GMT). Following the service, the cardinals reconvened in the Sistine Chapel to resume the secret balloting.

In contrast to the initial day, which involved a single vote, the schedule for the second day permits up to four rounds of voting – two in the morning hours and two in the afternoon.

According to media reports, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, who is presiding over the conclave as he did during the 2013 election of Pope Francis, expressed optimism that a new pope would be chosen today, which would be signaled by the emergence of white smoke from the Sistine Chapel.
