Controversy grips American media

(MENAFN) A controversy is gripping American media—not over military actions themselves, but over the premature disclosure of war plans. The focus isn’t on the ongoing US-backed Israeli bombardment of Gaza or the renewed airstrikes against Yemen, but rather on the carelessness of high-ranking officials in discussing these operations.

In a major security blunder, several top US officials—including National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and Vice President J.D. Vance—held sensitive discussions about military operations over the encrypted messaging app Signal instead of using secure government channels. While Signal offers encryption, it remains vulnerable to hacking, making this breach both reckless and illegal under the National Security Act.

The situation worsened when Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, was inadvertently invited to one of these discussions. His presence—somehow unnoticed throughout the meeting—allowed him to report on highly classified US military plans, including details on how Washington intends to pressure its European allies. This echoes past moments of US diplomatic bluntness, reminiscent of Victoria Nuland’s infamous “F*ck the EU” remarks.

Now, with the scandal exposed, the Trump administration is scrambling for damage control. Rather than addressing the security lapse, President Trump and his team have opted to attack Goldberg and The Atlantic, attempting to discredit the publication. However, even National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes has verified the legitimacy of the leaked discussions.

Ultimately, the uproar isn’t about the ethics of bombing Yemen or other military actions—it’s about the sheer incompetence of those who let the world know about it too soon.
