NBA, FIBA plan to explore new European basketball league
(MENAFN) On Friday, the NBA and FIBA announced that they are considering the creation of a new men’s basketball league in Europe.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis shared the news following recent meetings—the NBA Board of Governors in New York and the FIBA Executive Committee gathering in Mies, Switzerland.
"The European basketball community is proud of its seven-decade history of international club competitions and the elite talent it develops," Zagklis stated during a press conference.
He noted that despite basketball’s widespread popularity and the success of international tournaments, there is still "untapped potential in European club basketball." He explained that a new league could combine the NBA’s business expertise with FIBA’s global experience to attract a broader fan base, bring in new investors, increase club benefits, and foster partnerships that would benefit all stakeholders.
Silver outlined a proposed format featuring 16 teams, with 12 permanent members and four additional spots subject to promotion and relegation each season.
"Franchises would be awarded in a mix of existing club teams, potentially with some defectors from the EuroLeague, and start-ups," the NBA stated.
The league’s teams would be based in well-established basketball markets, major European capitals, and emerging regions poised for growth.
