NC MLA Demands Judicial Probe Into Deaths Of Two Gujjar Men

Srinagar- National Conference (NC) legislator from Budhal, Javid Iqbal Choudhary, on Thursday called for a judicial probe or an inquiry by a central agency into the disappearance and subsequent deaths of two Gujjar men in Kulgam.

Highlighting the concerns of the Gujjar community, Choudhary pointed to a series of troubling incidents, including the deaths of 17 people in Budhal, which, he said, have eroded trust in the authorities.

On the first day of the recess during the ongoing budget session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Choudhary visited the bereaved families in Kulgam to gather firsthand information about the case.

“The targeting of Gujjars and the lack of credible investigations into these deaths raise serious concerns. I urge a judicial probe or an investigation by a central agency into these incidents,” he stated.

Two of the deceased, Showkat and Riyaz, originally hailed from Khawas in Budhal and had migrated to Kulgam, where they worked as laborers after purchasing small plots of land. Choudhary noted that their deaths, along with earlier mysterious fatalities in Budhal, remain unexplained.

After meeting the victims' families, Choudhary alleged a“deliberate cover-up” and expressed disappointment over the indifferent attitude of law enforcement agencies. He called upon Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to intervene and ensure a transparent investigation through the National Investigation Agency (NIA) or the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
