Turkish PhD Student Gets Arrested by DHS
(MENAFN) Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish citizen and PhD student at Tufts University, was in compliance with her F-1 visa status, according to her attorney, Mahsa Khanbabai. “Rumeysa was heading to meet with friends when she was detained by DHS (Department of Homeland Security) agents.
We are unaware of her whereabouts and have not been able to contact her,” Khanbabai stated in a formal declaration.
Ozturk’s detention is linked to her advocacy work, which includes co-authoring an op-ed in the Tufts University newspaper in 2024.
In the piece, Ozturk called for the university to recognize what she referred to as the Palestinian genocide and urged the school to withdraw investments from companies with connections to Israel.
The move follows a larger effort by Canary Mission, an online platform that targets and blacklists students and activists who support Palestine.
The arrest occurs within the context of a broader crackdown on pro-Palestinian students and scholars during the Trump administration.
This includes the cases of Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist and recent Columbia University graduate, and Badar Khan Suri, a researcher at Georgetown University.
A footage that went viral showed Ozturk’s detention, with ICE agents restraining her despite her non-resistance.
While being detained, Ozturk can be heard speaking with her mother in Turkish, saying, “Mom, I have to hang up.”
