Russian vessel catches fire off South Korea's southeastern coast
(MENAFN) In a maritime incident off the southeastern coast of South Korea, a Russian cargo ship caught fire early Wednesday morning, leaving six crew members injured.
According to reports from local news agency, the 7,534-ton refrigerated carrier was spotted ablaze by a South Korean coast guard patrol boat around 7:14 a.m. local time in waters near the port city of Busan.
Responding swiftly, the coast guard deployed additional vessels and aircraft to the scene to combat the flames and rescue the crew. Of the 23 sailors aboard the Russian-registered ship, six sustained injuries, with two requiring emergency airlift due to severe burns. The remaining four injured crew members were transferred to safety by boat, having suffered minor wounds.
Within approximately 40 minutes, the fire was successfully extinguished by the coast guard's efforts. However, an investigation into the precise cause of the maritime accident remains ongoing. Authorities have not released any further details at this time regarding the identities of those injured or the ship's cargo and destination.
