Paleontologists Discover New Dinosaur Species in Mongolia
(MENAFN) A group of paleontologists has discovered a new rare dinosaur species with large claws, a groundbreaking discovery announced by a news agency on Tuesday.
The fossil of the dinosaur, named Duonychus tsogtbaatari (meaning "two fingers"), was found during the construction of a water pipeline in Mongolia’s Gobi Desert, based on the report.
The fossilized remains had a fully preserved 30-centimeter (11.8-inch) claw, a remarkable discovery that offers valuable insights into the species’ anatomy.
Darla Zelenitsky, an associate professor at the University of Calgary, explained that Duonychus belonged to the therizinosaur family, a group of herbivorous dinosaurs known for their distinctive features.
Duonychus stands out because it had only two fingers on each hand, unlike other therizinosaurs, which typically possess three.
“They call them the sloths of the Cretaceous period—totally bizarre looking things,” Zelenitsky stated, as reported by the news agency. “They had rotund bodies, long necks, small heads, and unusually long arms with big hands.”
