China pushes inclusive transition, action on civilian killings in Syria

(MENAFN) A Chinese envoy urged the Syrian provisional officials on Tuesday to push an inclusive political transition and take strong actions against terrorism, amidst escalating violence in the country.

The call came as the Syrian interim authorities announced the initiation of a one-month independent investigation into the recent indiscriminate killings of civilians in seaside zones. "The inhumanity and brutality of which is outrageous," Fu Cong, China’s permanent spokesperson to the United Nations, stated during a UN Security Council meeting.

"We are following the progress in this regard, and we hope that the Syrian interim authorities will carry out their work in a transparent and responsible manner, which is crucial to the international community's assessment of the credibility of the political transition in the country," Fu added.

The violence, which has intensified since March 6, has claimed nearly 1,500 lives, including over 1,000 civilians, in Syria’s Latakia and Tartus provinces, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. In response, the UN Security Council condemned the mass killings and called on the Syrian government to “protect all Syrians without distinction.”
