Moscow announces US, Russia holding ‘creative’ discussions
(MENAFN) The ongoing discussions between Russian and US delegations in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, are a “creative” diplomatic effort, though they may not lead to an immediate breakthrough, according to Russian lawmaker Grigory Karasin.
Karasin, who chairs the International Relations Committee in Russia’s upper house of parliament, provided an update during a break in the negotiations. He described the talks as “technical” in nature, focusing on maritime security in the Black Sea and the potential revival of the Black Sea Initiative. Originally mediated by the UN and Türkiye, the agreement collapsed when Russia withdrew in July 2023, citing the West’s failure to uphold its commitments regarding sanctions relief for Russian grain exports.
“Not every negotiation results in a major agreement or signed document,” Karasin noted before resuming the closed-door discussions. “What’s important is keeping communication open and understanding each other’s positions, and in that regard, we are making progress.”
Russia’s delegation includes Sergey Beseda, an adviser to the director of the Federal Security Service, while the US team reportedly consists of Andrew Peek, a senior director at the White House National Security Council, and Michael Anton, a senior State Department official.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov emphasized that the talks are mainly centered on maritime security. He also reiterated that when the original Black Sea grain deal was established, certain commitments were made to Russia that were never fulfilled, and these issues remain a key part of the agenda.
US President Donald Trump has proposed reviving the grain deal as part of his broader mediation efforts between Russia and Ukraine, Peskov noted.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to Trump’s request to temporarily halt attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, while Ukraine committed to a similar ceasefire.
However, according to Moscow, Kiev has repeatedly violated the arrangement, including on Monday morning. Russia has warned that it may withdraw from the agreement if Ukraine fails to uphold its commitments.
A Ukrainian delegation is also present at the same luxury hotel in Riyadh where the US-Russian talks are taking place. However, they have had no direct contact with the Russian representatives, instead holding separate discussions with the US delegation the previous day.
