Trump declares discussions on splitting region between Moscow, Kiev ongoing
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has confirmed that negotiations are underway regarding the division of land between Russia and Ukraine, suggesting that talks on territorial disputes are making progress.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump stated that discussions about "dividing up the lands" were actively taking place, though he did not provide specific details. He noted that he had held “very good discussions” with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, adding that a ceasefire agreement was in the works.
“We have the confines of a deal,” Trump claimed, hinting at a potential resolution.
Four regions—Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye—voted to join Russia in 2022, but Ukraine refuses to recognize these referendums and still considers the regions part of its territory. Kiev also continues to claim Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.
Trump also stated that a partial ceasefire was expected in several areas, eventually leading to a "full ceasefire."
His comments come ahead of scheduled talks on Monday regarding the Ukraine conflict. According to US Special Envoy Keith Kellogg, Washington will participate in “indirect talks” with Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Saudi Arabia. The Kremlin has described these talks as “consultations” rather than full-scale negotiations.
Last week, American and Ukrainian officials met in Jeddah, where US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that territorial concessions were discussed. Following the meeting, Kiev tentatively agreed to a 30-day ceasefire.
However, Putin has set several conditions, including:
•Addressing the fate of Ukrainian forces surrounded in Russia’s Kursk Region
•Ensuring that Kiev does not use a ceasefire to rearm and rebuild its military
Russia has previously rejected temporary truces, advocating instead for a comprehensive resolution that tackles the root causes of the conflict. Putin has stated that an immediate ceasefire could be achieved if Ukraine withdraws from Russian-controlled territories, including Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye.
