DRDO Establishes 15 Centre Of Excellence For Defence Innovation With Private Sector
The initiative aims to boost self-reliance in defence technology under the "Make in India" initiative.
Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth, informed Parliament on Friday that the DRDO has introduced new deep tech and cutting-edge policies under the Technology Development Fund (TDF) scheme.
These policies facilitate funding through grants to private entities for the joint development of emerging defence technologies.
The TDF scheme, a crucial initiative by the Defence Ministry, encourages industry participation in designing and developing indigenous defence technologies.
This move is expected to strengthen India's defence ecosystem and reduce dependence on foreign technology.
Responding to a question by Congress MP Sanjana Jatav in the Lok Sabha, Seth highlighted that DRDO laboratories have adopted structured research roadmaps.
Additionally, bi-monthly global reviews will be conducted to keep pace with the latest advancements in defence technologies worldwide.
A network of 15 DRDO Industry Academia Centres of Excellence (DIA-CoEs) has been established in premier institutions such as IITs, IISc, and central universities.
These centres will drive futuristic research across 84 technology verticals, facilitating the indigenisation of defence technologies.
To further bolster research and development, DRDO scientists will have online access to international databases in defence science and technology.
Each DIA-CoE focuses on designated futuristic research areas, contributing to critical technology development for defence and security applications.
Additionally, a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has been activated to streamline industry-academia collaboration through the Centre of Excellence programme.
This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing India's defence capabilities by fostering innovation and collaboration between industry and academia.
