US lawyer general brands pro-Palestine demonstrators ‘domestic terrorists’

(MENAFN) US Attorney General Pam Bondi has labeled pro-Palestinian student protesters as “domestic terrorists” and warned that universities could lose federal funding if they fail to address anti-Semitism on campus.

Speaking to Fox News on Sunday, Bondi discussed recent protests at Columbia University and criticized institutions for not doing enough to protect Jewish students.

“It’s absurd that these universities are not stepping in to protect them, yet they’re shielding these protesters who are also, I believe, some domestic terrorists,” she said.

Bondi accused demonstrators of inciting riots and violence but did not provide specific examples. She warned that the Trump administration could withdraw federal funding from universities that fail to address anti-Semitic incidents, citing the decision to cut $400 million from Columbia University over its handling of campus protests.

In February 2024, the US Justice Department launched a multi-agency task force to combat anti-Semitism, focusing on harassment in schools and universities. Officials stated that the group would coordinate federal enforcement and work to eliminate anti-Semitic behavior on campuses nationwide.

Campus demonstrations erupted across the United States following Israel’s war in Gaza, sparked by the October 2023 Hamas attack, which killed around 1,200 people and saw 250 hostages taken. Israel’s subsequent military response has killed over 50,000 people, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, and has devastated the region.

While protesters, including Jewish students, argue that criticizing Israeli policy is not anti-Semitic and that Palestinian rights advocacy aligns with American values, others claim that the demonstrations have created a hostile environment for Jewish students. A Columbia University task force later found “serious and pervasive” issues affecting Jewish students on campus.
