Ukrainian Drone Attack Ignites Fire at Airfield in Russia

(MENAFN) On Thursday, Russia reported that a fire had erupted at an airfield in the Saratov area after an overnight Ukrainian drone assault.

The Russian Defense Ministry issued a statement claiming that its air defense systems successfully intercepted 132 Ukrainian drones across various areas during the attack. Of these, 54 drones were shot down in the Saratov area.

Roman Busargin, the Governor of Saratov, shared on Telegram that the drone strike led to a fire at the Engels airfield, located approximately 470 kilometers (292 miles) from the Ukrainian border.

Engels is also home to a military airbase, which houses Moscow’s Tupolev Tu-160 strategic bombers, capable of carrying nuclear weapons.

Busargin further reported that residents living near the airfield were evacuated for safety, and he described the attack as "the most massive drone attack of all time."

He added that around 30 homes, a hospital, two kindergartens, and a school had been damaged in the strike. Emergency services are currently working on-site.
