Russia downs own drones following Putin-Trump phone call
(MENAFN) The Russian military confirmed that it had to destroy its own drones after President Vladimir Putin ordered a halt to strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The decision followed a phone conversation between Putin and US President Donald trump on Tuesday, during which the two leaders agreed to a 30-day pause on attacks targeting energy facilities.
According to the Kremlin, Putin immediately instructed the Russian military to comply with the ceasefire agreement. The Defense Ministry later confirmed receiving the order and detailed how it was implemented.
At the time of Putin’s directive, seven Russian attack drones were already en route to Ukrainian energy sites linked to the country’s military-industrial sector in the Nikolaev region. To follow the new orders, Russian air defense systems had to neutralize the UAVs. The ministry reported that six drones were destroyed using a Pantsir missile system, while another was taken down by a fighter jet.
Despite the ceasefire initiative, Russia accused Ukraine of violating the deal just hours after the Putin-Trump call. According to Moscow, Ukrainian forces launched three fixed-wing drones at an energy facility in Kavkazskaya, located in Russia’s Krasnodar Region. The attack damaged an oil reservoir and ignited a fire that had yet to be extinguished.
The targeted facility is part of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), an international oil transport network involving major US energy firms such as Chevron and Mobil.
Russia’s Defense Ministry condemned the strike as a deliberate provocation, claiming it was an attempt by Kiev to sabotage Trump’s peace efforts.
