Federal Judge Blocks Elon Musk-Led Effort to Shutter USAID

(MENAFN) On Tuesday, a federal judge ruled that a task force led by Elon Musk to shut down the US Agency for International Development (USAID) likely violated the US Constitution, blocking any further cuts to the agency.

US District Judge Theodore Chuang sided with 26 anonymous USAID employees who had sued Musk's Department of government Efficiency (DOGE), arguing that the accelerated shutdown of USAID violated the Constitution’s Appointments Clause and the principle of separation of powers, granting a partial preliminary injunction in favor of the plaintiffs.

In his 68-page ruling, Judge Chuang noted: "The court finds that Defendants' actions to shut down USAID on an accelerated basis, including its apparent decision to permanently close USAID headquarters without the approval of a duly appointed USAID Officer, likely violated the United States Constitution in multiple ways, and that these actions harmed not only Plaintiffs, but also the public interest, because they deprived the public's elected representatives in Congress of their constitutional authority to decide whether, when, and how to close down an agency created by Congress."
