Fighters become viral as India rejoices Holi festival

(MENAFN) Millions across India and South Asia celebrated Holi, the Hindu Festival of Colors, on Friday, joyfully smearing each other with vibrant powders. The festival, a national holiday in India, marks the end of winter and symbolizes the victory of good over evil.

Border Security Force (BSF) personnel stationed at the India-Pakistan border in Jaisalmer were seen enthusiastically celebrating with Gulal (colored powders). Troops along the India-Bangladesh border also took part in the festivities.

Rooted in Hindu mythology, Holi signifies renewal and the divine love between Krishna and Radha. The celebrations included traditional food and drinks such as thandai (a spiced milk-based beverage) and gujia (sweet, deep-fried pastries). A long-standing tradition associated with Holi is the consumption of bhang, a cannabis-infused drink linked to Lord Shiva and enjoyed during various Hindu festivals.

Holi’s appeal extended beyond India, with several embassies in New Delhi joining in the festivities. The Russian ambassador conveyed Holi greetings in Hindi, underscoring India and Russia’s enduring friendship. A 1956 photograph of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, celebrating Holi with Soviet leader Anastas Mikoyan at Rashtrapati Bhavan resurfaced online, gaining traction on social media.

A widely shared video showed widows in Vrindavan breaking societal norms by actively participating in Holi, embracing colors and joy once considered off-limits to them. At Aligarh Muslim University, students from diverse backgrounds came together to celebrate, fostering unity, especially as Holi coincided with the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

President Droupadi Murmu described Holi as a festival of unity, love, and harmony, urging citizens to spread the "colors of progress and prosperity." Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed hope that the celebrations would bring renewed enthusiasm and strengthen the bonds of unity among Indians.
