Kremlin declares Putin held meeting with Trump envoy

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks in Moscow on Thursday with Steve Witkoff, U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed. Witkoff traveled to Russia to present details from the recent U.S.-Ukraine negotiations in Saudi Arabia.

During Tuesday’s discussions in Jeddah, Washington and Kiev released a joint statement in which Ukraine agreed to a proposed 30-day ceasefire with Russia, while the U.S. announced it would resume military aid and intelligence sharing with Kiev.

On Friday, Peskov stated that Witkoff met with Putin to provide “additional details” on the proposal and to deliver “information and signals” from the Russian president to Trump.

Putin, speaking at a press conference on Thursday, reiterated Moscow’s support for resolving the Ukraine conflict through peaceful means and expressed readiness to discuss Trump’s ceasefire plan. He even suggested a direct conversation with the U.S. president could take place. However, Putin emphasized that any truce must be thoroughly defined to ensure a lasting resolution rather than a temporary pause in hostilities.

The Russian leader raised concerns about how a ceasefire would be enforced, warning that Ukraine could use the pause to rearm and reinforce its troops. He also stressed the need to clarify the fate of Ukrainian forces currently surrounded in Russia’s Kursk Region, where Kiev launched an incursion last year.
