Refugee Boat Sinks Off Cyprus, Killing Seven
(MENAFN) Authorities have confirmed the deaths of seven individuals following a refugee boat sinking off Cyprus' southeastern shore on Monday. Search operations are continuing for other missing passengers, while two survivors, both Syrian men, were rescued, as revealed by a news agency.
The boat, with 21 Syrian migrants on board, had set off from Tartus, a coastal city in northwestern Syria, around 200 kilometers from the site of the incident. Those rescued revealed that the boat had sunk four days before it was found.
To aid in the search, a warship, Hellenic Navy plane, four port and Maritime Police ships, helicopters, passing vessels, as well as medical crew have been deployed.
This tragedy is the first reported case of a refugee boat from Syria trying to arrive at Cyprus ever since the collapse of the Assad regime that took place last December.
In response to rising migration activity, authorities have stepped up patrols amid growing concerns over the instability in Syria, which could lead to an increase in migrant crossings.
