Houthis announce recent assault on US navy carrier group

(MENAFN) Yemen’s Houthi movement has announced that it launched two long-range attacks on a US Navy carrier group over the past 24 hours, describing the strikes as retaliation for recent American air raids.

In a statement on Sunday, the Houthis claimed to have fired 18 ballistic missiles and drones at the aircraft carrier USS Harry Truman and its escort warships. The group followed up with another long-range strike on Monday but did not confirm whether the attacks hit their intended targets. The Pentagon has not publicly commented on the claims.

The attacks come in response to US President Donald Trump’s order for a large-scale military operation against the Houthis on Saturday. Trump justified the strikes as a necessary response to the group’s “piracy, violence, and terrorism.”

The Houthi-run Yemeni Health Ministry reported that the US strikes killed at least 53 people and injured nearly 100 others. According to US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, multiple senior Houthi figures were targeted and “taken out.”

Additional strikes were reported by Houthi-affiliated media on Sunday night, including attacks on a cotton ginning plant in Hodeidah and an Israeli cargo vessel that had been seized by the Houthis more than a year ago.

Since late 2023, the Houthis have carried out multiple strikes on international shipping they believe to be linked to Israel, framing their actions as support for the Palestinian cause. They have also launched missile and drone attacks on Israel and Western military forces in the region.

Despite repeated airstrikes by the US, UK, and Israel against Houthi military positions, the group has continued its attacks on naval traffic. They temporarily paused their campaign earlier this year following a truce between Israel and Hamas but resumed strikes last week after accusing Israel of failing to meet its commitments on humanitarian aid for Gaza.
