The initiative emphasises re-educating students on the dangers of vaping and nicotine addiction.
As part of the campaign, state-of-the-art vaping detection sensors will be installed in schools, including the upcoming GEMS School of Research and Innovation, set to open in August 2025.
Lisa Crausby OBE, Group Chief Education Officer at GEMS Education, said:“Vaping is one of the most pressing health threats facing young people today. We refuse to stand by and let this dangerous trend take hold in our schools. Students found with vapes in our schools will receive serious consequences and follow-up education sessions with counsellors to support them in quitting vaping.
“By installing cutting-edge vaping sensors across campuses, we are setting a new standard in student protection. This is not just about enforcement; it is about education, prevention, and ensuring our students understand the risks associated with vaping. We are very proud to be leading the way in making our schools vape-free zones.”
How will students be monitored?Sensors will be installed at key hotspot locations in schools, providing real-time alerts to administrators and enabling prompt action when vaping is detected.
These highly sensitive, tamper-resistant sensors can differentiate vaping from other airborne particles, ensuring precise detection and response.
Additionally, they feature an audio function that can detect certain words, such as 'help', alerting staff to potential concerns.
Alongside random bag checks, sensor monitoring, and increased staff vigilance in targeted areas, GEMS is intensifying student and parent awareness efforts.
Additionally, schools will collaborate with health professionals to support students struggling with nicotine addiction .
Crausby added:“This initiative goes beyond banning vaping. It is equipping our students with the knowledge and resilience to make better choices for their health. We are committed to working with our parents, educators, and the wider community to ensure that our young people grow up in a clean environment and prioritise their wellbeing.”
