Japanese Politician Takashi Tachibana gets stabbed During Protest

(MENAFN) Japanese politician Takashi Tachibana was stabbed with a knife on Friday during a demonstration in front of the Finance Ministry in Tokyo.

Tachibana, who is aged 57, sustained injuries and was sent to the hospital, as reported by a news agency. Fortunately, his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The attacker was apprehended by authorities, who are now investigating the incident. Tachibana, who is the founder of the right-wing NHK group (unrelated to the broadcaster), posted a footage in which he reassured the public that he is doing well.

He mentioned that the cut he received was about 3 centimeters (1.18 inches) in length, and he confirmed that the weapon used in the assault was a machete.

This attack comes after a series of violent incidents involving politicians in Japan. In 2022, previous Premier Shinzo Abe was murdered while delivering a campaign talk.

The next year, previous Premier Fumio Kishida was targeted at a campaign event in the western town of Wakayama, though he was undamaged after a man tossed an explosive substance at him.
