Japan Requests Taiwan to describe Pavilion as Privately Managed at World Expo
(MENAFN) Japan has requested that Taiwan clearly say that its pavilion at the next World Expo in Osaka is operated by a private company.
This request reportedly came from Japan's Foreign Ministry after a Taiwanese government statement suggested that the pavilion might be introduced as an official showcase.
Since Japan does not have diplomatic ties with Taiwan, the request is thought to be a reaction to diplomatic sensitivities surrounding the situation.
The Japanese Foreign Ministry has declined to comment on whether such a request was made. Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs expressed its hope that the expo would help deepen ties between Japan and Taiwan.
In response to the situation, China’s Foreign Ministry reiterated its opposition to any official interactions between Taiwan and any country that maintains diplomatic ties with Beijing.
China considers Taiwan a “breakaway” district, whereas Taiwan, which has been self-governed since 1949, continues to assert its independence.
