M23 Rebels Advance in Eastern DRC Ahead of Peace Negotiations

(MENAFN) On Monday, M23 rebels pressed forward with their offensive in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, just before direct peace negotiations with the Congolese government in Angola, according to local reports.

A Congolese news agency stated that clashes neared the capital of Walikale in North Kivu district.

The escalation occurred despite Angolan Leader Joao Lourenco’s call for a ceasefire between the conflicting sides ahead of the upcoming peace talks in Luanda.

Mediated by Lourenco, who represents the African Union in efforts to resolve the conflict, discussions between the Congolese government and M23 rebels are set to begin on Tuesday.
