Trump declares he ‘would like to meet with’ Putin
(MENAFN) US President Donald trump has expressed his willingness to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin after Moscow indicated openness to a proposed 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine. However, Putin also raised concerns about potential loopholes and strategic setbacks in implementing the truce.
During a press conference alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump described Putin’s statement as “very promising but not complete,” adding, “I’d love to meet with him or talk to him.”
Trump stated that Washington has already discussed key aspects of a potential “final agreement” with Kyiv and is now awaiting Russia’s response. He noted that territorial negotiations have been part of these discussions, emphasizing the importance of reaching a meaningful ceasefire rather than a temporary pause in hostilities.
Meanwhile, Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, visited Moscow on Thursday to relay the results of US-Ukraine talks held in Saudi Arabia earlier in the week and to communicate Russia’s stance back to Washington. Reports suggested that Witkoff was scheduled to meet with Putin behind closed doors, but officials have not confirmed whether the meeting took place.
Earlier, Putin outlined Russia’s concerns regarding the ceasefire, warning that it could give Ukrainian forces time to regroup, receive more weapons, and reinforce their positions. He also questioned how a truce would be enforced across a vast frontline, arguing that ceasefire violations could lead to disputes between both sides.
Putin further noted that Ukrainian troops who entered Russia’s Kursk Region in August 2024 are now trapped, stating, “Are we supposed to let them out after they committed mass war crimes against civilians?”
The Russian leader suggested that further direct talks with Trump might be necessary to work out a viable resolution, though no specific timeline for a potential meeting has been confirmed.
