Vance says to press over DEI scrutiny ‘I love my mother-in-law’

(MENAFN) US Vice President J.D. Vance has dismissed media scrutiny over his mother-in-law, Lakshmi Chilukuri’s support for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), which contrasts with his own stance. The controversy arose after CBS News reported that while Vance has publicly opposed DEI initiatives, Chilukuri, who is the provost at the University of California San Diego’s Sixth College, has supported her institution’s diversity efforts.

The CBS report highlighted a letter from Chilukuri on the college’s website, in which she emphasized the importance of equity, inclusion, and diversity. This comes amid broader efforts by Vance and US President Donald Trump to roll back DEI programs across the federal government.

In response, Vance acknowledged his opposition to DEI but defended his mother-in-law, stating that he loves her despite their differing views on the issue. He further criticized CBS for targeting his family member, suggesting that the network’s coverage was aimed at attacking Trump rather than addressing substantive issues. Vance also praised Chilukuri for her kindness and her role as a dedicated family member.
