Syria Accuses Israel of Using Its Territory to Launch Strikes on Lebanon

(MENAFN) Syria’s ambassador to the United Nations has accused Israel of using Syrian territory as a base for carrying out military strikes against Lebanon, warning the UN Security Council that such actions could push the region toward broader conflict.

Speaking before the Council, Ibrahim Olabi said Israel “continues to pursue its aggressive and expansionist policies,” describing what he called an ongoing pattern aimed at destabilizing Syria during its recovery phase.

He stated that Israel has “adopted five-year plans to expand settlement activity in the occupied Syrian Golan,” and claimed that it “fuels tensions and unrest and escalates its attacks as its continuous incursions into southern Syria are not enough.”

Olabi also alleged that Israeli forces operate across borders from areas inside Syria, saying Israel “uses Syrian territory that it has infiltrated as a launching point for military attacks targeting brotherly Lebanon.”

In addition, he accused Israel of targeting civilians and carrying out other harmful actions, saying it “deliberately targets civilians, abducts Syrian children and civilians” and “sprays unknown chemical substances on agricultural lands,” claims he said have been documented by UN agencies.

Beyond military concerns, Olabi warned that Israeli leadership is also attempting to influence regional geopolitics. He said that Israel’s leadership “continues to promote speculative maps linking Syria to regional axes unrelated to it,” suggesting efforts to reshape the region’s future at Syria’s expense.
