Top aide says Zelensky won’t issue apology to Trump

(MENAFN) Ukraine has no intention of apologizing for the tense exchange between President Vladimir Zelensky and US President Donald Trump during their recent White House meeting, top adviser Mikhail Podoliak has said.

Defending Zelensky’s stance, Podoliak argued that the US must recognize the need to exert maximum pressure on Russia. The heated Oval Office discussion saw Zelensky dismiss the prospects of diplomacy while warning Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance that the US would inevitably "feel" the effects of the conflict. Trump, in turn, accused Zelensky of being disrespectful, ungrateful for past US support, unwilling to negotiate peace, and risking escalation into a global war.

Following the confrontation, Zelensky reiterated his appreciation for US military aid and expressed willingness to engage in peace talks, though he admitted the meeting “did not go as planned.” However, Podoliak, speaking to Le Point on Friday, insisted that Zelensky had been "completely correct" in both his message and delivery.

“Our president tirelessly explains to our partners what this war is and who provoked it. Without coercing Russia, there can be no peace negotiations,” Podoliak stated, adding that Ukraine saw no reason to apologize for an "imaginary mistake."

He also dismissed claims that Trump and Vance had "humiliated" Zelensky, instead describing the exchange as an "emotional discussion" that could help clarify differences between Washington and Kiev.

In the aftermath of the dispute, the US suspended military aid and intelligence-sharing with Ukraine, stating that support would only resume if Kiev demonstrated a genuine commitment to pursuing peace talks.
