Global South Women Peacekeepers Convene In New Delhi

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) Over 5,000 Indian troops are currently deployed in 9 peacekeeping missions in hostile environments, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar said on Monday while addressing the first-ever conference for UN women peacekeepers from the Global South. He highlighted the unique role women peacekeepers play by having exclusive access to local women.

India's Ministries of Defence and External Affairs made history by hosting the first-ever such conference for women peacekeepers from the Global South, themed“Women in Peacekeeping: A Global South Perspective,” on February 24-25, 2025. Key dignitaries, including UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix and UN Under Secretary General Christian Saunders, participated in the conference, which focused on reviewing and addressing key challenges faced by women peacekeepers. Under Secretary General Christian Saunders recently visited several cities of Afghanistan.

Tanmaya Lal, Secretary (West) at the Ministry of External Affairs, Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani, Vice-Chief of Army Staff, and Lt Gen Rakesh Kapoor, Deputy Chief of Army Staff, underscored the pivotal role of women in peace missions. Lt Gen Kapoor said that women peacekeepers often excel as negotiators, further emphasizing their essential role in conflict resolution.

Dr. Kiran Bedi, the first female UN Police Advisor, highlighted India's leadership in training women peacekeepers from ASEAN countries. In 2007, India became the first nation to send an all-women Formed Police Unit (FPU) to Liberia, solidifying its role in gender-focused peacekeeping. At present, India continues to lead with 154 women uniformed personnel across several UN peacekeeping missions, including three Female Engagement Teams deployed in Abyei, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
