Aquatech Eco Consultants To Plant 1 Million Eelgrass Plants In Lake George For FWC Restoration Project

(MENAFN- PR Newswire) This ambitious project aims to restore vital submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) , which plays a critical role in maintaining water quality, stabilizing sediments, and providing essential habitat for fish, manatees, and other aquatic species. The planting will take place within fenced enclosures designed to protect the young plants from herbivory, allowing them to establish and thrive.

"AquaTech Eco Consultants is honored to lead this historic effort in restoring Florida's waterways," said Beau Williams, CEO at AquaTech Eco Consultants. "Planting one million eelgrass plants is a monumental step toward revitalizing Lake George's ecosystem and supporting the long-term health of the St. Johns River. Our team is committed to ensuring the success of this project through expert planning, strategic implementation, and ongoing monitoring."

This project is part of FWC's ongoing efforts to combat habitat degradation in Florida's freshwater systems. Over the years, pollution, fluctuating water levels, and boat traffic have significantly reduced natural eelgrass coverage, impacting aquatic life and water clarity. By restoring eelgrass in these areas, the project will provide critical benefits such as:

  • Enhanced habitat for fish species, including largemouth bass and crappie
  • Improved water quality by filtering nutrients and stabilizing sediments
  • Support for manatees and other wildlife that rely on eelgrass as a food source

AquaTech Eco Consultants has extensive experience in aquatic habitat restoration, including major submerged vegetation collection and replanting efforts throughout Florida. The company has also played a key role in conservation initiatives such as providing seagrass for manatee rehabilitation at Zoo Tampa and sponsoring marine science scholarships at USF.

With work already underway, the one-million-plant restoration effort is expected to continue through June 2025 . AquaTech Eco Consultants will closely monitor plant establishment to ensure long-term success.
