Russia, US take initial steps towards mending their ties
(MENAFN) Russia and the United States have taken initial steps towards mending their relations, which have been strained for years under the Biden administration. In a meeting held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Russian and American delegations discussed diplomatic ties, future peace talks on Ukraine, and a potential summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump. The Russian team included Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, presidential aide Yury Ushakov, and RDIF CEO Kirill Dmitriev. Representing the US were Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and special envoy Ambassador Steve Witkoff.
The talks, which lasted nearly 4.5 hours, resulted in agreements to restore diplomatic missions between the two countries and appoint ambassadors to each other’s nations. Both sides aim to remove barriers imposed by the Biden administration, including issues like the seizure of Russian properties in the US and banking restrictions. Foreign Minister Lavrov noted that the US delegation had begun to better understand Russia’s long-standing position on various issues, including the Ukraine conflict. Although conflicts of interest remain, both sides have agreed to continue dialogue and work towards resolving geopolitical issues and improving economic cooperation.
Lavrov reiterated Russia's position on Ukraine, emphasizing that NATO’s expansion, particularly Ukraine’s potential membership, remains a significant threat to Russia. Additionally, Moscow has made it clear that any NATO troop deployments to Ukraine would be unacceptable. Presidential aide Ushakov mentioned that while progress on the Ukraine issue might take time, negotiators from both countries will continue working towards a solution. The two delegations also agreed to take each other’s interests into account and explore future areas for cooperation, such as joint projects in the Arctic. RDIF’s Dmitriev expressed optimism about the talks, suggesting that significant progress could be made in a matter of months, with both sides exploring potential economic partnerships. While it's early to discuss compromises, the meeting has laid a foundation for ongoing dialogue and collaboration.
