UN Welcomes Lebanon’s New Government, Pledges Support for Priorities
(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his approval on Sunday regarding the formation of Lebanon’s new government under Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, offering support for its key objectives.
According to Guterres' spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, the UN is eager to collaborate closely with the new government to reinforce the cessation of hostilities, implement UN resolutions, and address Lebanon's population's needs through recovery and reform. Dujarric also highlighted the importance of executing a "comprehensive, inclusive, and sustainable" reform agenda.
The UN reaffirmed its commitment to Lebanon’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and political independence, in accordance with the Taif Accords, the Baabda Declaration, and Security Council resolutions 1701 (2006) and 1559 (2004).
Resolution 1701, adopted in 2006, calls for a permanent ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel, along with the establishment of a buffer zone. Resolution 1559 advocates for the withdrawal of foreign forces and the disbandment of militias.
Lebanon’s new government, formed on Saturday, marks the country’s first since 2022. President Joseph Aoun accepted the resignation of caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati and signed a decree appointing a 24-member Cabinet with Prime Minister Salam.
