Elon Musk Makes USD 97.4 Billion Bid to Acquire OpenAI, Seeks Return to Original Mission

(MENAFN) Elon Musk, leading a group of investors, has made an unsolicited offer to acquire OpenAI for USD 97.4 billion, with the intention of restoring the company to its original mission of creating technology for the benefit of humanity.

Musk presented the bid to OpenAI’s board of directors on Monday, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. The offer aims to counter OpenAI’s shift toward a for-profit model, which Musk has criticized.

“It’s time for OpenAI to return to the open-source, safety-focused force for good it once was,” Musk said, according to his attorney, Marc Toberoff.

In response, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman rejected the offer and humorously suggested that Musk should buy his social media platform, X, for USD 9.74 billion. Musk fired back, calling Altman a “swindler” and dubbing him “Scam Altman.”

Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 with an investment of around USD 45 million, stepped down from the board in 2018 after disagreeing with Altman over strategic decisions. Since then, Musk has been outspoken about his concerns over OpenAI's increasing commercialization, particularly its collaboration with Microsoft.
