Macron Urges Trump to Focus on China, Not the EU
(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron has advised US President Donald Trump to prioritize addressing China over focusing on the European Union, which he sees as a valuable ally to the United States. Macron's comments came in response to Trump's early February remarks in which he suggested that the US would impose tariffs on European Union goods due to unfair trade practices. Trump expressed frustration, claiming that the EU does not import enough American goods, including cars and farm products, and that the US faces a significant trade deficit with the bloc.
During an interview with CNN on Sunday, Macron addressed Trump’s concerns directly, stating, "Is the EU your first problem? No, I do not think so. Your first problem is China. So you should focus on the first problem." He emphasized that Europe is a strong ally to the US and that any tariffs or threats against the European economy could harm the shared interests of both sides. Macron further added, "If you want Europe to be engaged on more investment, and security, and defense, if you want Europe to develop, which is I think the interest of the US, you should not hurt the European economies by threatening it with tariffs."
