Xi Jinping, Thai PM Vow to Combat Southeast Asia Scam Networks

(MENAFN) China’s President Xi Jinping and Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra pledged to intensify efforts to dismantle scam networks operating in Southeast Asia during a meeting in Beijing on Thursday.

Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos, which border Thailand to the south of China, have become notorious hubs for online scam operations. These criminal enterprises lure individuals with promises of well-paying jobs, only to traffic them to isolated compounds where they are forced to work, scamming people globally.

This illicit activity has tarnished Thailand’s reputation, with several high-profile cases emerging, including that of Chinese actor Wang Xing, who was trafficked into a scam operation after being recruited in Bangkok.

Both Thai and Chinese officials have taken steps to address the issue. One notable effort was a reported visit to the border region by Liu Zhongyi, China’s vice minister of public security, to investigate and tackle the networks behind these crimes.
